Launch of the National Workplace Safety and Health Campaign and Fun Walk 2019

The National Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Campaign 2019 was launched on 20 April 2019 with a Fun Walk at Gardens by the Bay East. Some 1,000 participants took part in the event.

This year’s Campaign continues to call upon the industry, employers and employees to “Take Time to Take Care of Your Safety and Health”. Mr John Ng, Chairman of the WSH Council, said companies need to be intrinsically motivated to prevent accidents and keep their workforce healthy. He highlighted to participants the words “Bro”, “Eh”, “Oi” and “Hey” seen on signages at the Fun Walk are simple expressions of care which we often use to address our friends and colleagues. He hoped that such simple expressions can spark a movement to get everyone to shout out a word of care when they see a colleague about to do something unsafe. Mr Ng said that this year’s campaign “A Word of Care” aptly supports our aspiration for WSH 2028 as we encourage companies to drive a culture of care, trust and prevention.

Guest-of-Honour Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Minister of State for Manpower and National Development, highlighted the relevance of the event in strengthening WSH ownership and enhancing focus on workplace health in line with the WSH 2028 strategies. He said, “Achieving good WSH requires a collective effort. When employers, supervisors and workers own and practise WSH in a committed manner, improvements in WSH can be sustained. That all of you are joining us for this Fun Walk shows that you are committed to the WSH cause.” The 3.5km Fun Walk marks the launch of the National WSH Campaign reinforcing the importance of taking care of our workers’ health.

The activities at the event include a showcase of winning entries of the “Safety Starts With Me” Competition and WSH 2028 strategy map. Fun Walk participants were encouraged to pen their word of care on activity panels. Free health checks were also available.

In conjunction with the Campaign launch, WSH Council has produced a new video to illustrate this simple act of “A Word of Care” and how co-workers can start caring for those around them in their daily work activities at the workplace.
Industry and members of the public will get to see messages on “A Word of Care” through various publicity channels such as print and digital advertisements, and outdoor media.
